Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors . . .
The first footprints were laid down in November 2003 when we left the awesome Anderton Boat Lift and headed over the Cheshire fields to Great Budworth. After a good lunch, more fields and then the Lion Salt Works and the Trent and Mersey Canal to complete the circuit. It was a lovely day but little did we know what would grow from that simple beginning.
Every month we have done a walk and our area covers the original Lancashire, Wirral, Cheshire, North Wales, West Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. Dozens of people have joined us and a wonderful spirit of friendship abounds.
Sometimes we amble by peaceful canals or rivers and often we follow field paths to savour the wonderful countryside that is our heritage. Many have remarked how fortunate we are to have such pleasures on our doorstep. We do venture on more demanding walks into the hills but always look forward to lunch time breaks in country inns and cafes where the fellowship continues as we eat and drink together.
From the outset, we have also catered for those who love exploring fascinating places without a lot of walking. So, on our 'other trips', we have descended below the Mersey tunnel, closely observed sewage disposal in Manchester, eaten freshly baked biscuits in a beautiful Cheshire water mill and fed ducks at the idyllic Hollingworth Lake. These 'other trips' are very popular.
The most ambitious projects we have tackled
have been our Sponsored Relay Walks each
being about 100 miles and covering a whole
weeked and raising thousands of pounds for
charities. Walkers, car drivers and central
controllers have thoroughly enjoyed our
Sponsored Walks and all recieve a badge
for their efforts.
The climax of our year is the Christmas Party
at a favourite pub. A good time is had by all.
Charities that we have supported:
Motor Neurone Disease
North West Air Ambulance
Claire House Childrens Hospics
Action for Children
Macmillan Cancer Support
The Peace Centre - Warrington
